6.1 Mural and Story of Mural's Creation

Family Connections is a Parent and Family Center that grew out of E. R. Taylor Elementary School's "Healthy Start Program". Family Connections is here to establish a sense of community for participants by assisting parents in their challenging task of raising healthy children. We initiated a special project for children that would inform more families and youth about Family Connections and some of the wonderful services we offer to parents and children. So in January 1995. Family Connections decided to sponsor a mural contest. The contest was open to all classrooms at E. R. Taylor School. We asked the classroom teachers to discuss with their children the theme of the mural "What Does Community Mean To You?" and then to put their thoughts on paper. We received nine entries and an impartial jury selected the winning entry. Mishwa Lee's 5th grade class produced the successful drawing that earned them first place status in our contest. The students received a Free Pizza party and are reproduced their drawing on our wall. What you see is the results of classroom discussions, hard work, and some extraordinary creativity. The students worked together to create these works of art, and they demonstrated how powerful a "community" can be when people come together to achieve a common goal.
