“I learned that if you want someone to get touched by your play
the play has to mean something to you like a personal experience.”

One of the fundamental aims of leading the young writers through the workshop process is to increase their comfort level in sharing ideas and feelings. The collection of plays which follow all deal with the expression of conflict resolution through metaphor. The use of metaphor is a powerful means of allowing the students to open up and to incorporate their own opinions and reflections into their works.

Self expression is empowering. Nicolas, a young writer from the very first EORO workshop, said the following:

"I decided to write my personal life experiences so everyone who would see it would get an understanding of other people’s lives. Working with Joe Lopez, the actor that I chose to act my play was fun. He knew what he was doing and was a good character. Not only did I just write a play but I also learned more about acting and writing which was to my convenience because I discovered my new and valuable talent."

Hi my name is Anthony Schlander. I first participated in the Each One Reach One program in December of 1999 and again in October of 2000. When I first met the staff they were incredibly positive and totally supportive. When I found out what the program was about I though to myself that I wouldn’t be able to do this. What did I look like teenage William Shakespeare but I did it and liked what I did! The program taught me a lot. It showed me how to put down how I was feeling on the paper in front of me and jut flat out use my imagination. I now know that writing is one of the most powerful and productive things I can do for myself. It took my confidence to another level and I realized that what I was doing wasn’t writing a one-act play, what I was doing was believing that I can do anything I want if I put my mind to it. This program is definitely second to none.
