Each year the Families In Transition (FIT) program sponsored
by Charity Cultural Services Center (CCSC) enrolls 14-18 year old, limited
English proficient, recently immigrant youth from (3) San Francisco schools:
Newcomer High School, Galileo High School, and Lincoln High School.
Achievements
include increasing youth's success in the following areas:
- Grade
point average
- Communication
skills
- Self-esteem
and self-competence
- Decrease
in potential for violence
- Increase
in perception for a brighter future
Working
closely with school counselors and teachers, program staff participate
in school orientations to introduce incoming students to the FIT program.
Priority is given to "at-risk" students (those experiencing
severe adjustment problems reflected in academic and social behavior
and performance).
Program
staff conducts assessments and interviews to evaluate applicants from
other sources. Language proficiency of all applicants is evaluated through
the Language and Literacy Assessment Rubic (a process developed by the
San Francisco Unified School District).
To
help students learn effectively, a comprehensive, family-focused,
intercultural approach is implemented. The program consists of
(3) components to meet student's needs:
