"When you provide your time it helps many immigrant Newcomers feel more comfortable
in the tasks that would otherwise be difficult for them."

We need your help with providing services to the many Newcomers that arrive everyday. We have a need for people to work during the week on anything from helping people make phone calls in English, to filling out forms, to light clerical work. When you provide your time it helps many immigrant Newcomers feel more comfortable in the tasks that would otherwise be difficult for them.

Testimonials

A volunteer at CNSC, C.Y. Shi, said that she feels she needs to give her time because when she moved to America she was in a very similar situation as most Newcomers. She had to find a place to live and work without the help of friends and family. She has since retired, and volunteers at CNSC regularly. Her experience is especially useful to Newcomers because she has already had to work out similar problems when she arrived in America.

Bob McKeoun, another volunteer at CNSC, readily admits that volunteers make or break a non-profit organization. This is why he devotes his time to the Chinese Newcomers Service Center. With 37 years of work experience at Wells Fargo Bank he is entrusted to help CNSC with strategic planning. Bob first came in contact with CNSC at a non-profit conference where he met Teresa Wu, Executive Director. She convinced him CNSC was the place to volunteer. He realizes the world is drastically changing and non-profit organizations need to change along with it. "The not-for-profit world needs to become more like the business world - lean and yet productive," he says. Bob appreciates CNSC because they are open-minded to this challenge, embracing new ways and technology. He adds, "Non-profit organizations also need to bring in people from diverse backgrounds to volunteer, such as the information technology world. CNSC faces challenges and I am looking forward to helping them set their goals. It is a unique and worthwhile organization."

The mastermind behind many of the exciting developments at the Chinese Newcomers is Deborah Harper, a woman of rare dedication and vision. Deborah is a local product, studying for her degree in Interdisciplinary Social Science at San Francisco State University. The birth of her two children prompted Deborah into a dual role: working to help families in need while at the same time nurturing her own. Through the city of San Jose Department of Neighborhood Services, she focused on assisting recent immigrants, enjoying the diversity of languages and culture.Deborah Harper
When her children entered college, Deborah followed them back to school herself to study computers, website design, and the technology needs of non-profits. At TeamTech she found the vehicle to combine all of her major interests: assisting non-profit agencies, supporting and strengthening families, and working in a multicultural setting. Needless to say, she could not have been more tailor-made to the needs of Chinese Newcomers? From her first introduction, she grasped immediately the strengths of CNSC as well as the challenges facing our future. Most of all, she exhibits seemingly boundless energy when it comes to translating plans into action. We predict that Deborah will help create a legacy of change and growth that newcomers to our community will appreciate with gratitude for decades to come.
