"...we
need to hear their stories, benefiting all newcomers."
Chinese
Newcomer Service Center provides much needed help and services to immigrants.
Read, in their own words, what our clients, employees and volunteers have
to say about us.
"We
are here to serve the Chinese newcomers when they first arrive in this
country. They hear about us, and then they come to our center. Then,
of course, they want to find jobs, and they want to know where their
children can go for school, or where they can learn English. It is quite
difficult for a person to adjust in a new land with a new language and
to learn new customs. To become a citizen, and then knowing
to vote with different issues, which are very foreign to them. So we
bring up all of these items to them, to help them understand. This helps
them get into society as soon as possible, and adjust their life to
be a productive citizen.
One major
service offered by the CNSC is an extensive job training and referral
program. Clients work closely with a counselor to identify their job
interests and goals. If necessary they are referred to available workshops
to get the training they need. Clients are then helped with actual job
placement with the assistance of the California Employment Development
Department. CNSC has helped over 600 clients find jobs in a variety
of industries."

"The
Chinese Newcomers Service Center continues to exemplify the spirit and
mission upon which it was founded. The Center has been instrumental
in representing the interest of the new members of the San Francisco
area who are in need of services. By providing services to foster self-sufficiency
and independence within the community, the Chinese Newcomer Service
Center contributes a wonderful service to the Bay Area and California
as a whole."
Senator
Diane Feinstein

whose lives you have touched.

the computer learning class at CNSC during the month of August 1998,
and am about to finish in November. The course helped me learn faster,
and more efficiently."

"I like
to work here because I like to help people, especially the new immigrants.
The Newcomers really need help because they have to start their life
all over again."
Peter

"I
think Chinese Newcomer Center is a great place for Asian American people
because of their useful programs. It helps that many of them are free."
Doris
Him Grover, Member of the Board
"I'm a
second-generation offspring of Irish and Scottish immigrants that came
here with a sixth grade education and no services. And they came to
Halifax, Nova Scotia, and San Francisco, and if an organization like
this were afforded them they would have been, I think, much more successful
than they ultimately were. But again I would like to say that as an
example of how important the organization is to the community around
us. In addition to my role as a surgeon at Kaiser Permanente, I am also
the medical director for Operation Access, which provides medical services
for people that have no insurance. I'm sure we all know of families
that have suffered the ravages of down sizing the economy, that need
very necessary health care services, and our organization seeks to provide
operations for those individuals. We have provided over 200 operations,
free of charge, to Bay Area citizens. I'm also extremely proud of the
volunteers that I work with. It is an incredible organization, and as
the nurses that I work with put it, "more fun than our regular jobs."
Thank You."

"This
is one of the best programs, one of the best organizations that exists
in Chinatown. I am a third generation Chinese American, born and raised
in Chinatown. My late grandfather, James Jew, was a very active member
in Chinatown. And this is just a small, little tribute to him, saying
that I miss him, and I really loved him very dearly until the day he
passed away. I guess this is part of him speaking out saying, and giving
back to the community that he resided in all of his life, and it's just
I think CNSC for 29 years, they may have another 100 to go because we
have so many new immigrants coming, and they need services, and I'm
going to do my darndest to raise as much money as possible, for this
organization, Thank you."

"Fifty
years ago when my mom and dad came over, assistance available to newcomers
was not as organized as it is now. After leaving the service, my dad
went back to China, married my mother, and brought his war bride back
to America. Just like today, the challenges of a new country have to
be a combination of exhilaration and terror. I know that my dad, like
so many other immigrants, started out with menial jobs. He worked at
a hotel making donuts, and operating the elevator. But then someone,
I don't know who, advised him about night school. Bless that person,
dad studied color television repair, it was a new technology, and the
advice of that stranger provided him with an income, with a business,
and a way to feed his 7 children. There was another stranger too, and
I don't know who she is either, but she helped guide my mother to citizenship
class. With 7 children, I know that the time mom took out to study for
her citizenship, the time that she took away from the kids, was probably
the only thing that kept her sane. Thankfully today all the goodwill
and assistance of those strangers, to whom I owe that marvelous debt,
have been institutionalized. Now we have the CNSC. It tries to do the
same thing those anonymous, self-sacrificing and goodhearted strangers
did for my parents. I'm really pleased to be here supporting the work
of the center, and in a little way paying back to those kind strangers
who helped my parents back then. Every time the center helps our new
immigrants, teaches them to pay their taxes, helps them to find a job,
helps them to find medical assistance for their children, or helps guide
them through citizenship class. It carries forth the very best tradition
of assistance to our Chinese community, we are lucky to have this kind
of organization, and I feel honored to be here participating in a marvelous
charity ball for them. Thank you."

"When
Teresa Wu approached me to run for Empress, without any hesitation I
said yes, because in my heart I know it's a worthy cause. Although in
the past I was never directly involved with the Newcomers Center, I
would volunteer to help when asked. One of the fundraising events in
the past was donations through Sinocast, the Chinese radio station.
Since I was an English instructor on air, I often asked my listeners
to donate generously to the Newcomers Center. Now I am running for Empress,
again I'm asking you to give your best and generous support."
