Asian
Pacific Islander Family Resources Network...
APIFRN is comprised of 27 public and private agencies in San
Francisco who work to strengthen families and reduce the risk of
abuse and neglect in the community. Dedicated to increasing the
availability of neighborhood based services and programs for families
with children ages 0 to 12, APIFRN provides crisis intervention,
support groups, workshops, case management, and other vital services
available through the 27 collaborating agencies.
APIFRN's
MISSION
is to support families in functioning more effectively by promoting
self sufficiency and empowerment for Asian and Pacific Islander
families with an emphasis on children 0-5 years of age. To build
healthy and sustainable communities through strong collaboration,
community building and leadership development.
FIRST
YEAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- APIFRN
has successfully brought together 27 agencies to provide family
support services.
- Over
2,000 API families participated in case management services, parent
education classes, support groups, emergency support and referrals,
home visits, drop-in child care and parent/child groups, ESL classes,
mental health counseling, immigration and legal services, job-readiness
and computer training.
- APIFRN
funding allowed three agencies serving Cambodian, Laotian and
Vietnamese communities to co-locate in the heart of the Tenderloin
community. Since the creation of this joint office, there has
been a 50% increase of families utilizing the culturally-sensitive
family support services now available.
- The
APIFRN provided 8 cross-training workshops for Network partners
including APIPES (parenting education curriculum), domestic violence,
substance abuse, and case management skills. This invaluable training,
enhancing skills, resources and expertise, led to more effective
case planning and referrals among the Partners.
- The
APIFRN partners have created child/family friendly environments,
provided over 60 parent education workshops/classes in 8 different
languages, enhanced program services and improved access to community
resources for Asian/Pacific Islander families.
Principals
of Family Support...
All APIFRN agencies abide by the principals of family support:
- Staff
and families work together in relationships based on equality
and respect.
- Staff
enhance families' capacity to support the growth and development
of all family members - adults, youths and children.
- Families
are resources to their own members, to other families, to program
and to the community.
- Programs
affirm and strengthen families' cultural, racial and linguistic
identities and enhance their ability to function in a multicultural
society.
- Programs
are embedded in their communities and contribute to the community-building
process.
- Programs
advocate with families to mobilize formal and informal resources
to support family development.
- Programs
advocate with families for services and systems that are fair,
responsive and accountable to the families served.
- Programs
are flexible and continually responsive to emerging family and
community issues.
- Principals
of family support are modeled in all program activities, including
planning, governance and administration.
