DVI facutly is comprised of a pool of industry professionals who love to teach. Here is a list of instructors who teach in the program when their commitments allow them to do so.


Diana J. Brodie

Diana J. Brodie has been a freelance editor for the past 10 years. She has edited everything from Reality Shows to Corporate Videos to Feature Documentaries jand has cut for a number of networks including: The History Channel, Logo, ESPN, National Geographic, HGTV, Outdoor Life Network, WE, Discovery, DiscoveryUK, FSN, PBS. Diana no only teaches Final Cut Pro and DVD Authoring Fundamentals for the Digital Video Intensive program.

Marshall Crutcher

Marshall Crutcher is an Emmy Award winning composer, based in San Francisco, California. Classically trained, he studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the North Carolina School of the Arts. His credits include feature films, documentary films, works for dance, internationally recorded compositions for the concert hall, national commercials, interactive entertainment and corporate work. Marshall teaches "Working with Music for Film" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Kim Foscato


Bay Area sound designer/engineer, Kim Foscato has worked on countless film and music projects at Sky Walker Ranch and other locations including "Enchanted," "Beowulf." and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." In addition, Kim also does sound work for Sony Entertainment’s gaming division. She teaches "Audio" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Philip J. Gallegos


DGA (Directors Guild of America) Assistant Director/Producer Philip Gallegos, has over 20 years experience working on countless films and television shows such as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Time of Your Life, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Matlock and Remington Steele. He's worked in everything from shorts, to development (Fox, Michelle Pfeiffers' Pfeiffer Guinzburg) and post-production. As a precursor to teaching at SFSU CEL Phil production managed USC's first Post Graduate Film Workshop to create the feature film No Easy Way. He holds a BA in Theatre Arts and Television Production from Santa Clara University. He also is a graduate of the DGA's Assistant Directors Training Program and holds an MA from USC’s Peter Stark Motion Picture Producing Program. Phil teaches "Producing," "Directing" and "Aesthetics" for our Digital Video Intensive Program.


Andrea Gard


Andrea Gard has worked as a Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Effects and Foley Editor at Skywalker Sound since falling in love with the craft in1996. Andrea's credits include studio and independently produced feature films and documentaries, as well as several video games. Feature film credits include the Academy Award (for sound) nominated films Cast Away and Contact, MPSE award winner Titan A.E ., Punch Drunk Love , The Iron Giant , Mimic , What Lies Beneath, Tomb Raider , Final Fantasy , Finding Neverland , Armageddon , Frequency , Dinosaur , Girls Will Be Girls , Straight Jacket , Testosterone , November , and Groove . Her documentary credits include the San Francisco-produced documentary Double Dare , and the double Emmy Award winning film My Flesh and Blood. Prior to moving to San Francisco, Andrea worked on documentaries as well as corporate, government, and educational productions in Maine and Washington D.C. as an editor, production supervisor, and producer, including the Emmy-nominated television documentary series Moon Shot , and a video about how to train mine-sniffing dogs in Afghanistan. Andrea teaches "Audio" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Jarid Johnson


Jarid Johnson’s is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's premier hand-held camera operators, working on DVD and home video releases by major artists including Neil Young, Hot Tuna and String Cheese Incident. He has shot for the Live at the Fillmore TV program produced by Bill Graham Presents, shot at every major music venue in the Bay Area, and toured with the Grateful Dead and R. Kelly. In addition, he has shot hundreds of one-off music events over 13 seasons at the Clear Channel/BGP crown jewel venue, Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. His directing credits at Shoreline include The Other Ones and Pearl Jam. Jarid also built the foundation for a documentary on the Baton Rouge blues scene. Jarid is the founder of SF Visuals. He holds a BA in Broadcast Communication Arts from San Francisco State University. She teaches "Audio" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Shane King


Shane made his first film at age 12. It starred Star Wars action figures and monsters made of playdough. Taking a few short breaks to get a biology degree, travel through Southeast Asia for a year and work 5 seasons as a deckhand on Alaskan fishing boats, Shane has always found his way back to his passion: filmmaking. Shane is also the owner of Keela Films and his latest film, Girls Rock, will be in theaters in March 2007. Shane is an Apple certified Final Cut Pro instructor, and also teaches Documentary Production for the Film Arts Foundation. For our Digital Video Intensive program, he teaches "Final Cut Pro" and "DVD Authoring."


Toney W. Merritt


Toney W. Merritt has been an independent Filmmaker for of 30 years with countless releases to his filmography. Recent projects include Rest Stop: What goes around and To Make Something Beautiful. He has served on the board of directors for the Film Arts Foundation and Canyon Cinema Coop, in addition to numerous festival and grant panels. Toney teaches "ScreenWriting" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Khristine Page


Khristine Anja Page has taught for SFSU MSP since 2001 in the Web Design Intensive. She has authored several books for Macromedia’s “Training Form The Source” series including Dreamweaver 8, 4, MX and MX 2004 and co-authored the “Dreamweaver MX 2004 Certified Developer Study Guide” and “Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 Training From The Source.” She has also taught at Stanford’s Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship and numerous independent clients. She is also the editor/publisher of Crescent Magazine, works as a Designer, Photographer and Web Developer for NorthWind Studios and with ELYSEUM. She’s worked as a Multimedia Specialist at the San Francisco Exploratorium and as a Senior Web Designer at Ideum. Khristine holds a BFA with a Senior Award for Excellence from Rhode Island School of Design. She has received awards from Adobe and her artwork has been shown in galleries in Providence, RI, New York City, and Palo Alto, CA. Khristine teaches "Web Basics for Video Professionals" for our Digital Video Intensive and "DreamWeaver" for our Multimedia Studies Program.


Laura Plotkin


Laura Plotkin is a Bay Area award winning documentary producer/director. She creates work that uses personal narrative to challenge mainstreams stereotypes. Her Rockefeller nominated film, Red Rain, which chronicles the life of female boxer Gina"Boom Boom" Guidi, has screened in over a hundred film festivals world wide as well as aired on television both nationally and abroad. Some of her other works include: Supreme Concrete Jungle, Know What I Mean, 21 and Dirt Farmer. Her most current film, Murder Triptych, explores the homicide of an Oakland resident. Laura has also worked as a producer/DP on several rock-docs including: Marvin Gaye, Marianne Faithful, and History of Punk Rock. She has taught documentary filmmaking at San Francisco State University, California State University at Monterey Bay and UC Berkeley, as well as lecturing through out the USA. Laura received her bachelors in cinema/film production from San Francisco State University and her MFA from California College of Art. Currently Laura has just completed writing her first screenplay, which is being produced for theatrical release. Laura teaches "Documentary" for our Digital Video Intensive program.


Cindy Rangel


Cindy Rangel is a San Francisco based Freelance Artist, Producer and Instructor. She has worked as a freelance artist for companies such as Mova, Inc., The State of California, A & S Animation and on several Independent films. Her work ranges from 3D animation and Character Rigging to Compositing and Motion Graphics. Currently she is working as VFX Coordinator for Fade to Blue, LLC. Cindy has also taught at Full Sail Real World Education, Academy of Art University and San Francisco State University. She teaches "After Effects" for our Digital Video Intensive and Digital Media Production programs.


Mike Sly


Mike Sly is a professional videographer and editor who works on a wide variety of projects including broadcast, corporate, commercial, music video and film. His skills range from single camera ENG (Electronic News Gathering), EFP (Electron Field Production) through working on live multi camera environments. His list of clients includes KTVU-TV, CBS Sports and The Late Show with David Letterman. His work can be seen on the screens of Beard Papa's Cream Puffs locations. He is also a resident übergeek who is adept in post-production using tools such as Final Cut Pro, After Effects and Photoshop. Mike is also a graduate of our Digital Video Intensive program where, together with our Digital Media Production program, he teaches technical/creative courses.

 

Craig Abaya (program director)

San Francisco native, Craig Abaya directs SFSU CEL's Digital Video Intensive and other digital media programs. His background includes film/video, multimedia, music, audio, web design, and photography. He has taught a variety of subjects at the CEL and throughout the Bay Area and acts as project consultant to Apple Computers. He is also an award-winning songwriter and independent recording artist and serves as the official concert photographer for the Bridge School founded by Neil and Pegi Young.In college during the pre-digital days, Craig created his own bachelor's program in multimedia that combined studies in film, video, computers and electronics. While an undergrad, he gained his first teaching experience at SFSU Graduate Film Program.
