About Her Circle Ezine
Her Circle is a new e-zine dedicated to the celebration and exploration of the feminine experience in the world community. Our goal is to promote awareness, understanding and respect for women across cultural lines through intelligent works of writing, art, and photography by women around the globe. We are looking for work that creates a sense of intimacy with its subject by effectively relaying a story or revealing a telling moment in the lives of women. Themes related to non-western culture and women's rights issues are highly encouraged.
Literature Guidelines and Departments
Her Circle accepts works of Fiction, Creative Non-fiction, Personal Essay, and Poetry. All work is evaluated on its relevance to departmental themes and its ability to connect with the reader while providing immediacy.
Fiction & Creative Non-fiction (including Memoir)
5,000 word maximum: Well written short stories with strong characters.
Personal Essay
3,000 word maximum: Thoughtful inquiries in the narrative style
Poetry
2 - 3 pages per poem. Prose poems of exceptional quality can take liberty, but should be no longer than 10 pages.
Literature submissions are considered for publication in one of four departments:
Breaking Form
Explores life outside of traditional cultural and religious beliefs, may focus on decision to experience alternative cultures or on individuality as a standard
What She Knows
Focuses on traditional culture and religious practices, defines a sense of place and its people
War Cry
Features work that explores the role of women in war and other violence against women
Transcending Bounds
Work that strives to imagine life beyond barriers of culture and religion, fosters the idea of a world community
Feature Artist & Photographer Guidelines
Each issue of Her Circle Ezine features the work of one or more artists and photographers studying culture and the feminine experience.
Submissions must include a minimum of four images and up to a maximum of ten images, or a link to an online portfolio. In addition, an artist's statement or essay discussing the work must accompany the submission.
Each image must be labeled or otherwise identified with the following information:
- Title of work
- Date it was created
- Location (for photographs)
We accept files in .TIFF and .JPG formats, saved at a high resolution (preferably 300ppi) with no compression. Files must be at least 640X480 pixels or larger.
How, When, and Where to Submit
Submissions are accepted throughout the year for quarterly publication. There are no limits to the number of submissions you can make, and you can choose to contribute to multiple departments. Please send your works of fiction, non-fiction, personal essay, poetry, art and photography to hercircleezine@aol.com.
Compensation and Copyright
As with other startup publications, we have a limited budget. However, it is very important to us that we do all we can to support the efforts of our contributors.
Successful literary submissions will receive $25.00 USD for each published piece, payable upon publication. In addition, we will publish a short biography and provide a link to your personal website in an effort to help you promote your work.
Featured artists and photographers receive $50.00 USD for a portfolio of at least four images and an artist's statement or essay.
Authors and visual artists grant Her Circle Ezine limited and non-exclusive rights to distribute their work in electronic media. Once published on the site, work remains available through an online archive.
