Better Ways:

Simpler Approaches

to Working with the Rendering Pipeline and Basic 3D

Our problem is caused because the anchor point change is rendered after the 3D move. We'll need to use Composition Nesting (using a composition as a layer) to feed our current comp a door with the anchor point already set on the desired hinge. We could start over and make a new comp and drag the door in, but After Effects provides us with the Pre-compose command to do this on-the-fly. The Pre-compose command effectively sends current layers to newly created compositions in the past. This page discusses some approaches and tips that make the process faster than.

Approach 4: Pre-compose, Moving all attributes into the pre-compand move the anchor point to the desired hinge point.

Below is the Pre-compose Window. To Pre-compose, select the layer or layers you want in the new comp and choose Layer > Pre-compose from the menu. You can do this quicker by using com-shift-c (thumb on command; little finger on shift; index on c!). The bottom option, Move all attributes, will move all mask, effects and geometrics properties of the chosen layer(s) into the pre-comp. This comp is the same size as the original parent composition.

The next task is to align the door layer so that the hinge of the door is at the anchor point of the original parent. One way to do this is to move the anchor point to the door hinge in the door layer window, as shown below. (The anchor point can be enabled in the controls pop-up or by option-double-clicking on the layer in the layer window.) In this example, moving the anchor point in the layer window will automatically center it in this pre-comp and therefore in the parent comp.

Approach 5: Pre-compose, Moving all attributes into the pre-comp, turn on the grid and move the layer to the center of the pre-comp.

Another way to align the door hinge to the anchor point also uses "Move all attributes" when pre-composing. This makes the pre-comp the same size as the parent comp. The next step is to turn on a grid by clicking on the grid crosshair on the bottom left of the pre-comp. Then just move the edge to hinge to the center of the pre-comp. You can shift-drag to constrain horizontal (or vertical) movement, and nudge the layer by using the arrow keys. The door then centers in the parent comp window.
